Hope. Film of the year?

I love going to the cinema. This may feel like an obvious statement for a filmmaker to make but I really do. I love every part of the process from the popcorn to the trailers to the reclining chairs (the reclining chairs are a new addition to Watford Cineworld). I have an unlimited pass and try to go as much as possible partly to get my moneys worth but mostly because I love the experience. I have been so busy with work over the last few weeks that I have not had much time to go out so my cinema visits have been limited in October and September. You may have also noticed I have not been posting as much on social media. My work life recently has been stressful and hectic so other things have slipped through the cracks. I am hoping to remedy this moving forward.

One cinema trip I was able to make in recent weeks was to see Na Hong-jin’s excellent creature feature, Hope. This film is what cinema is all about. Big set pieces, thrilling action, engaging characters, and more than a few laughs. A blend of Mad Max Fury Road and Spielbergian Sci-Fi (there are some great close ups of characters faces reacting to what they are witnessing which echo Jurassic Park). One element of the film that particularly stood out to me was the structure. The screenplay felt as though it was build around two chases (with a monologue about diarrhoea placed in the middle of them) in an almost two act structure. Quite like Fury Road, the film almost acts as a feature long chase sequence with the action building and building while getting crazier and more out their as the story develops.

It is my favourite film that I have seen so far this year. The blend of action, comedy, and general insanity was truly inspiring. I do not think that I have enjoyed a trip to the cinema so much this year and I would massively recommend checking it out to anyone reading this. Hope, gave me a real shot of inspiration and was one of those films that reminded me why I do what I do. I love films that entertain and surprise me. The crazier the better. Hope definitely fell into that category for me.

I will be attempting to post more regularly on social media moving forward as it is an important aspect of the promotion of my work. Sock, is due to be released soon and with other upcoming projects I really do need to get back into that rhythm and expand my social media presence further. So, I apologise for my absence but I will be attempting to make it up to you moving forward!
